Introduce Your Teen to the Art of Cooking
If you haven't already, now is the time to acquaint your teen with "kitchen duty." Cooking teaches teens responsibility, encourages them to follow directions and builds valuable life skills.
Here's how to make the learning fun:
- Allow some freedom. Let your teen go through cookbooks and pick out recipes that sound interesting.
- Don't be a stickler about the menu. If your teen wants to serve breakfast for dinner, go along with it.
- Encourage your teen to create a "restaurant" at home. Give it a name. Fancy it up with place mats, centerpieces and assorted props. Have your teen prepare a budget for ingredients and a schedule for meal preparation so all the dishes are ready at the same time.
- Offer your help when needed. Demonstrate different cooking techniques. And of course, teach your teen how to clean up properly.
