Avoid a Surprise at Report Card Time
It's bad enough when a student brings home a disappointing report card. But it's even worse when poor grades catch parents by surprise.
To avoid these surprises and better support learning, stay up to date with your teen’s schoolwork efforts.
Here's how:
- Check your teen's daily assignments. Ask to see your student’s planner. If the school has an online gradebook, check it regularly (if you don't know how, call your teen's counselor and ask for help). Is your teen turning in complete work on time?
- Be available when your teen does schoolwork, or review it on your return home. Ask your student to show you graded work received back from teachers.
- Note any problem areas and offer support.
- Chat informally with your teen about school. Ask specific questions about what your student is doing each day.
- Listen closely. The things your teen focuses on will reveal a lot.
- Keep in touch with the teachers. Contact them if you have concerns. Encourage the teachers to be comfortable calling or dropping you a note.
