Use the When-Then Technique

When teens take responsibility for doing what they need to do, they are on the road to success in school and life. But how do you get your teen to do schoolwork or chores without constant reminders? Make your teen a promise using the words, "When ... then ... ."

For example, "When your history assignment is finished and turned in, then you can relax with that new game for a while."

You can also give a reminder without saying a word. For instance, if your teen is always supposed to feed the dog before dinner but hasn’t done it, you can leave your teen's own dinner plate turned upside down. This reinforces the message, "When you feed Fido, then you can eat!"

To use When-Then effectively, remember that this technique works best when you apply it consistently.
