‘Jot It & Forget It’ Method Helps Teens Deal With Stress

Research shows that the amount of stress and anxiety teens report feeling has risen in recent years. Some stress can be motivating. But when stress piles up, it can cause problems. Teens who are worriers may find that it’s hard for them to concentrate on studies.

Here’s a technique that can help:

Have your teen keep a notepad handy when doing schoolwork. If a worry begins to be distracting, your teen can write it on the pad, then turn the pad over, put it on the corner of the desk and go back to studying.

Each time a worry comes to mind, have your teen repeat the process.

At the end of the study session, have your teen look at the pad and choose one worry off it. Is it still worrying your student? Can your teen do anything to fix it? If so, suggest starting on a solution.

Help your teen find other ways to reduce stress, too. Exercise works. So does talking with friends. Sometimes just listening to music will relieve stress enough to let a teen get back on track.
