Focus on Having Fun & Being Together During Family Time
When family schedules are going in different directions, it can be hard to find time to spend together. Your teen may rather spend time with friends. But supportive family relationships help teens do better in school, and they are worth the effort.
Here are some tips to keep family time positive for your teen:
- Involve your teen in planning. Teens’ lives are generally directed by adults. They enjoy getting a chance to be in charge of something.
- Avoid criticizing. Issues you have with your teen should be discussed at a time when you are both ready to talk—in private.
- Stay in the moment. Imagine that you and your teen are on a family walk. Your teen is enjoying this time until you start asking questions about math grades. What do you think your teen will say the next time you suggest doing something together? During family activities, keep the conversation light. Sometimes, there is no need to talk at all—just enjoy one another’s company.
