Three Simple Strategies Can Keep Your Teen Motivated

It’s not uncommon for students to simply run out of steam when they’re a few months into the school year. So what can your teen do when motivation dwindles? And how can you help?

Encourage your teen to:

  1. Set small, “doable” goals. Writing a long paper can seem overwhelming. Help your teen break up big projects like this into one- or two-hour tasks.
  2. Plan some rewards. After finishing a task, your teen might take a few minutes to listen to a favorite song or go for a short walk, for example.
  3. Set personal standards. How good is “good enough?” The benchmark should be your teen's best effort—not just the minimum necessary to get by.
