For a Fresh Start With Your Teen ... Make the First Move

Teens who have secure and supportive relationships with their families tend to achieve more in school.

To strengthen your relationship with your teen, set an example and make the first move. Think about a recent situation you wish you’d handled differently. Did you snap at your teen because you were stressed about something else? Did you impose a punishment while upset, and realize later that you were not being fair?

Pick a quiet time when you are alone with your teen. Then say you are sorry. Offer to make things right. Be as calm and matter-of-fact as you can.

Don’t expect an answer right away. Your teen will need time to think things over. It will be easier if you make your actions match your words. After apologizing, make an effort not to repeat actions you regret.

If you have more than one thing to apologize for, wait about a week after your first apology. Then offer another. Again, no need to be dramatic. Just be honest and sincere.

Remember, this is not giving in to your teen. This is guiding your teen. By your words and actions, you are modeling a responsible, respectful relationship.
