Check Out Scholarship Offers With Your Teen’s Counselor

Receiving an offer of a scholarship to help fund further education sounds like a great opportunity. And often it is. But sometimes, even a scholarship can look like a much better deal than it is. Students and their families should be on the lookout for phony offers.

Do not trust any offer that:

• Asks you to pay “a small amount” to hold the scholarship. Real scholarships are always totally free to the students who receive them.
• Says your teen can win a scholarship without doing a thing. Most scholarships require applicants to at least fill out an application.
• Asks you for a credit card or bank account number. No one offering a real scholarship will ever do this!

Always check any scholarship offer your teen is considering with a school counselor.
