Be Prepared for Changes in Communication
Communication often becomes difficult during the teen years. You may find that your teen is often:
- Too distracted to talk. Teens are just more focused on their own lives and their friends than they are on family life.
- Uncomfortable talking about personal matters, such as physical and emotional changes. You may think your teen doesn’t trust you. More likely, your teen just thinks you won’t understand.
- Moody. There will be times when your teen won’t feel like talking and would rather be alone. Consult a doctor, however, if this is a major personality change for your teen.
It may not be easy, but communicating with teens is worth the effort. The connections you build help your teen feel secure and make better choices.
To encourage open communication:
- Make it clear that your teen's thoughts, opinions and feelings are important to you.
- Offer love without conditions. “I love you. I’m always here if you want to talk.”
