Help Your Teen Learn the Value of a Dollar
Summer is a great time to help your teen focus on a critical skill: money management.
Try these tips to help your student become a good money manager:
- Help your teen create a budget—and live with it.
- Encourage saving. If your teen has a summer job, suggest saving a fraction of each paycheck.
- Help your teen open a checking account and use an ATM card responsibly. Each month, your student can balance that account and see where the money goes.
- Discuss the importance of keeping track of electronic payments.
- Schedule family meetings to discuss your family spending and saving goals.
- Avoid coming to the rescue if your teen makes mistakes managing money. Instead, talk about what your teen can do to turn things around.
