Help Your Teen Keep Learning During the Summer
Summer is a time for fun. But that doesn’t mean learning should come to an end. Vacation does allow more time for different kinds of learning, however, such as picking up a new hobby or life skill.
This summer, encourage your teen to:
- Brush up on a skill. Suggest practicing, at least once or twice a week, any skill your teen is in danger of losing over the summer. This could be anything from speaking a foreign language to the most recent math concepts learned.
- Take a class. Together with your teen, explore classes available from the school district, your local recreation center or a nearby community college. Urge your teen to try one.
- Acquire life skills. Menu planning, cooking, budgeting, household repairs, tax preparation, child care, vehicle maintenance and more can be learned at home and will give your teen valuable practice in "adulting."
- Read. See who in your family can read the most books this summer.
