Share Strategies to Improve Concentration

Some teens say they just can’t concentrate when they read. They sit down with their books open, and five minutes later, their minds are wandering.

Does this sound like your student? Encourage your teen to:

• Avoid lying down while reading or studying. Teens who have trouble paying attention are likely to fall asleep.
• Read for shorter periods. Your teen should space out the assignment, and not try to read an entire chapter in one sitting.
• Read aloud. This uses two senses instead of just one.
• Get exercise. If your teen tends to get sleepy, suggest setting a timer. After 10 or 15 minutes of reading, your teen can move around for five minutes.
• Take notes. After every paragraph, have your teen write down the most important thing read so far.
• Pick “prime time.” A teen who conks out by 10 at night should not put off reading until 9:30 p.m.
