Rituals Build Parent-Teen Relationships

One reason that holidays are such special times is that family rituals often go along with them. Everyone looks forward to having a certain meal or participating in a cherished tradition. Rituals make memories and bring families closer.

But you don’t need to wait for a holiday to create family rituals. You can do things regularly to build a bond with your teen.

Here are some ideas:

Write your teen a loving note each month on the day with the same number as your teen's birthday.
Stay up late and talk with your teen. Teens are often more willing to open up late at night.
Plan a menu, then shop for and cook the meal together.
Work together for a cause you both believe in.
Have a movie night. Let your teen pick the movie.
Do something active together once a week. Run up and down the stairs. Have a "who can hold the plank position longer" contest.
Ask your teen to suggest a book you both should read. Then discuss it over a snack or a cup of tea. Do this as often as you can.
