Help Your Teen Take Charge
Students who have positive attitudes and a strong sense of responsibility tend to be more successful in school and in life.
To encourage these traits, empower your teen to take charge of:
- Personal decisions. Teach your teen to think before acting. Explain how to weigh the pros and cons of each of the options before deciding on the best one.
- Worries. Have your teen make a list. On one side of a sheet of paper, your student should list “Things I can affect by my actions.” On the other side go “Things I have no control over.” Help your teen focus only on side one.
- Learning. Encourage your student to review each day, and to schedule several short study sessions instead of waiting until the last minute to get things done. Help your teen brainstorm ways to find help when something is confusing.
- Feelings and emotions. Explain that life and people can and will be unkind and unfair. But your teen has control over how to respond. Suggest taking positive action instead of dwelling on someone else's negative behavior.
- The future. Have your teen set goals and post them in a prominent place. Checking them off as your teen achieves them will reinforce a sense of accomplishment.
