Self-Discipline Helps Teens Tackle Challenges

The past few years have been full of learning challenges for students and their families. Perhaps now more than ever, one of the most important things families can do is help their teens develop the self-discipline needed to tackle and overcome challenges.

Here are four ways to foster self-discipline:

  1. Don’t rescue your teen. Let your student experience the consequences of actions and decisions. If your teen puts off a task with a deadline, don’t help do it at the last minute. Your goal is bigger than one assignment. It is to help your teen become more responsible and self-reliant.
  2. Give your teen a say. Let your teen set a study schedule. After your student demonstrates self-discipline in that area, hand over control of another responsibility.
  3. Expect your teen to contribute to the family's well-being. Teens who have responsibilities at home begin to see themselves as important members of the family team.
  4. Pick your battles. Not everything is worth fighting about. Decide on the issues and values that are most important to you. Let other things go.
