Encourage Daily Goals and Big Dreams
One way to motivate teens to work harder on academics is by helping them focus on their dreams. Say that you are confident your teen can achieve great things—and that education is the ticket to getting there.
To foster a sense of purpose, encourage your teen to:
- Imagine. What important thing does your teen envision doing someday? How can your teen make that happen?
- Write. Writing down goals makes it more likely that your teen will achieve them. Have your teen write the dream down on paper and look at it often.
- Start the day with, “Today I will … .” Planning and accomplishing two or three simple things each day can motivate your teen to work on larger goals. Your teen's daily goals could include previewing the next chapter in the math textbook, spending half an hour working on an upcoming presentation, or writing in a journal for 10 minutes.
