Sharpen Your Teen's Proofreading Skills
Your student has great ideas. But your teen's school papers always get marked down for careless errors. This is a problem that can be corrected.
Anyone can learn to be a better proofreader. Share these tips with your teen:
- Read the paper very slowly, and read aloud if possible. Your teen should try to read only one word at a time. This makes it easier to catch errors. Reading aloud also helps in proofreading because it involves two senses instead of one. It is often easier to hear a word that has been left out than to catch the error by sight.
- Read what is actually on the page. This is harder than it sounds. We tend to see what we expect to see. Our brains fill in missing letters or even missing words.
- Proofread more than once. Some editors think it’s also a good idea to read the paper from back to front.
- Double-check for errors you frequently make, such as words you often misspell.
- Don’t get discouraged about mistakes. Help your teen keep in mind that publishers hire editors to proofread their copy, and books, articles and websites still have mistakes.
