It's Time to Review and Set New Goals

Set aside some time over winter break to look back at the first half of the school year with your teen. Then look ahead to the new year and what your student hopes to accomplish.

Here are some questions to ask:

Research shows that students are far more likely to achieve goals if they write them down, so have your teen make a written list of a few goals for the rest of the year. Then agree on some steps your teen will take to meet those goals.

Once you have a list, encourage your teen to post it in a visible spot. Some students need to see the list in an area visited by the whole family, such as the refrigerator door. Others prefer to keep the list in a more private place, such as a corner of a desk.

Finally, talk about fun ways to celebrate when goals are met!
