Help Your Teen Make the Most of Campus Visits
The best way for teens to decide where to apply to college is to see some colleges for themselves. But they need to do more than just drive up, get out and have a look around. To get the most from a college visit, help your teen begin planning now for a visit over winter break or later in the spring.
Encourage your teen to:
- Do some homework. Before visiting a college, your teen should at least review its brochures, catalogs and website.
- Make reservations. Your teen should book a tour, and possibly an interview with an admissions officer. It may be necessary to call several months in advance for this. Teens who are interested in a particular course of study may also want to arrange to speak to a professor in that department. If it's possible, your teen should consider staying overnight. Sometimes colleges will arrange for overnight visits in student dorms.
- Plan to act like a student. While on campus, your teen should try to attend at least one class and one campus event of interest.
