Relate Schoolwork to the World Outside of School
Teens are often more interested in their schoolwork when they can see a link between what they are learning and the world outside of school.
Here are some suggestions to help make this connection with different subjects. If your teen is studying:
- Government, look at your tax return together. Discuss the reasons for paying taxes, how they are paid, and the ways taxes affect your family and your community.
- A foreign language, watch a movie (with subtitles) in that language together.
- Math or accounting, ask your teen to plan your family's budget for one month.
- English, discuss the reading. If your teen is reading a novel or a play, ask "What would you do if you were facing a problem or decision similar to the main character's?" Or ask your teen to find a quote that would be great on a T-shirt.
