Use Interesting News Articles to Encourage Reading

News articles are great resources for encouraging teens to read. Since most news articles are much shorter than books or even magazine articles, your teen is less likely to protest that reading them takes too much time. And following the news can easily become a positive habit.

Quickly look through a daily newspaper. You will probably see at least one story a day about something your teen finds interesting.

When you read an article you think your teen would like, pass it along. Ask your teen to spend five to 10 minutes reading it.

Later, discuss the article together. Ask what your student thought of it. Did it teach your teen anything? What else could or should the writer of the article have included?
