Counselors Can Help You and Your Teen
The school counselor is an important ally for your teen and your family. In addition to helping your teen plan for life after high school, school counselors can:
- Help students deal with personal problems or family issues such as depression, abuse, stress, sexual harassment, drug abuse or grief.
- Refer families to needed community services.
- Mediate disputes among students.
- Help students set and reach learning and social goals.
- Work with families and teachers to track a student's progress in meeting academic and behavioral goals.
- Answer families' questions about school policies, courses and standardized tests.
- Serve as a link between families and teachers by talking with one or more of a student's teachers on the parents' behalf or coordinating a meeting between a student, parents and teachers.
- Sponsor support groups to help students explore issues such as self-esteem and anger management.
