Review Goals and Expectations
Now is a great time to review your goals and expectations for your teen. Talk together about how school is going so far and help your teen think about setting new goals. Ask:
- "How do you think you're doing in your classes?" If your student is struggling, ask "What do you think you could do to get back on track?"
- "What activities do you want to pursue—in school and beyond?" Help your teen research things to do now to get on the right path.
- "How is your life outside of school?" Is your teen happy with how things are going?
Listen carefully to your teen's answers. Then make it a point to:
- Keep expectations high. Make it clear that you expect your teen's best effort.
- Stay realistic. Students can be strong in some subjects and not others. It may not be realistic to expect your teen to raise a grade from a C to an A in one grading period.
- Offer your support. Say that you believe your teen can achieve goals, and you want to help.
