Show Your Teen How to Use Note Cards for Research

When your teen has a project to research, suggest taking notes on index cards. Writing down individual facts and ideas on note cards gives students an easy way to organize and plan reports and research projects.

Teach your teen to:

  1. Use different colored cards for different types of information. For example, facts might go on blue cards, expert opinions on green, quotes on pink and your teen's ideas on yellow.
  2. Write headings on white cards. For example, "Introduction," "Main Points," "Facts," "Details" and "Conclusion."
  3. Lay the notecards out on the floor under the heading that fits. Your teen can then move the cards around to create an outline that makes sense.

While writing, your teen can follow the outline, and use it to be sure to back up each main point with specific facts and details.
