After-School Activities Reduce Afternoon Risks
You've read stories about youth crime, and you're wondering what you can do to make sure your teen is safe.
Remember to:
- Monitor your teen during the afternoon. Did you know that the peak time for juvenile crime is the afternoon? That's also the time when teens may experiment with drugs, sexual activity and other risky behavior. Know where your teen is and with whom at all times. If you are at work in the afternoon, have your teen text or call you to check in after coming home from school.
- Set clear rules about where your teen can go and responsibilities at home and away from home.
- Meet the parents of your teen's friends. Talk with them about curfews and rules for all your kids. School meetings and events provide great opportunities for meeting other parents.
- Encourage your teen to get involved in a structured after-school activity, such as band or sports. Your teen will have fun, and you can be confident there will be adult supervision.
