Meet With Teachers to Maximize Your Teen's Success
Parent-teacher conferences are often called to address problems. But they are also valuable when nothing is wrong. Meeting with the teachers is a great way to make sure that your teen is doing as well in school as possible.
Before you meet a teacher, make a list of the things you want to talk about. Try to ask questions that delve deeper into your teen's school life. For example:
- Does my teen seem happy in your class?
- What do you see as my teen's strengths and special interests?
- Is my teen completing assignments as required?
- Is my teen performing at, below or above grade level?
- Do you ever alter assignments to accommodate students' interests and abilities?
- Do students ever have opportunities to learn at their own pace?
- Do you think my teen is challenged by this work? Or is it too easy?
- How does my teen react to trying new things or making mistakes?
- Does my teen work well independently? In groups?
- Does my teen accept leadership roles and responsibility?
- Does my teen exhibit intellectual curiosity?
- When presented with a chance to do something creative or think critically, how does my teen respond?
- What can I do to help my teen build on strengths and talents?
- How can I support you in your efforts?
