Self-Discipline Comes With Experience and Practice
Research shows that self-discipline has a positive impact on students' grades, test scores and attendance.
To help develop your student's sense of self-discipline:
- Avoid rescuing your teen, unless it's a matter of safety. A teen who forgets to turn in an assignment, for example, should experience the consequences. This teaches teens to think ahead and solve problems.
- Avoid doing things for your teen that your teen can do independently. Yes, it might be faster for you to clean your teen's room. But students need to learn how to pick up after themselves and take responsibility for belongings.
- Encourage your teen to participate in activities that promote self-discipline. Learning to play a musical instrument requires students to practice regularly. Team sports require them to show up for practice and games on time and give their all.
