Help Your Teens Resolve Sibling Conflicts

Do your kids fight often? Getting along with others and treating them respectfully is an important factor in school success. But learning how starts at home.

To help your teens learn to resolve conflicts and cooperate:

• Bow out of minor disagreements. Explain that you won't resolve conflicts for your children. They must try to work together.
• Encourage your teens to use "I-messages." This means talking about their own feelings rather than the other person's mistakes. Replace "You stole my calculator!" with "I feel angry when people take my stuff without asking."
• Have them list issues that cause disagreements.
• Help them discuss the issues calmly, and restate the other person's position to confirm understanding. Focus on solutions instead of blame.
