Encourage Your Teen to Read

By now, your teen is probably a competent reader. But students do best in school—and in life—if they are enthusiastic readers, too.

Don't worry too much about what your teen reads for pleasure. It just needs to interest your teen. Try suggesting a book about a hobby, sport or person your student admires. You might also suggest science fiction, mystery and fantasy books.

If your teen doesn't want to read books right now, don't give up. Refresh the available options by bringing home a variety of reading materials from the library. Clip or print news articles about things your teen might find interesting and put them in eye-catching places. Encourage your teen to try listening to audiobooks, too.
