Give Your Teen Some New Responsibilities

It doesn't help to burden children with tasks they're not ready to handle. But age-appropriate chores teach them how to be responsible.

Teens need to learn to be responsible for themselves. But chores should also teach helpfulness. They should engage the teens in helping their family or others.

What's age-appropriate for your student? Teens should be able to take responsibility for:

• Getting themselves up in the morning.
• Preparing their own lunches.
• Washing and drying their own clothes.
• Changing their bed sheets.
• Managing their own money.

It's also reasonable to ask your teen to help the family by:

• Assisting with projects around the house.
• Babysitting (but not during school hours).
• Cooking meals.
• Buying groceries from a list.
• Washing windows.
• Mowing the lawn.
• Washing dishes and mopping the floor.
• Watering plants.
• Changing light bulbs.
