Motivate Your Teen to Read This Summer
Some students may see summer vacation as a time to forget about school, but make sure that your teen remembers to read!
Summer reading can improve your teen's reading speed and comprehension. It also helps build critical thinking skills. And if your teen reads all summer long, it will be a lot easier to transition back into the school year in the fall.
Encourage your teen to:
- Check out the local library, in person and online. Many public libraries have summer reading programs aimed specifically at teenagers, as well as ebooks, audiobooks and videos to download.
- Start a book club. Many teens have summer reading lists provided by the school. Your teen and some friends can get together on a weekly basis to discuss the books they are reading for school.
- Consider reading in new ways. Graphic novels and audiobooks as well as news articles and feature articles offer great ways to enjoy reading.
- Bring a book to work. If your teen is working a summer job, suggest making the most of break time by reading. Your teen may even want to keep reading after getting home.
