Start Preparing for College Now
There are things you can do at every stage of middle and high school to help your student get to college:
- Middle school: Discuss careers your child might enjoy. Learn about the education requirements for those careers. Help your child set goals for the future, including education or training after high school. Start saving for higher education tuition.
- Freshman year: Encourage your teen to explore strengths and interests by getting involved in clubs, volunteer work or sports. Colleges want to see activities that matter to your student. Learn about options for obtaining financial aid, and plan ways to pursue them.
- Sophomore year: Help your teen check out college brochures and websites. Together, learn about the college entrance exams, and find out about registering for and taking pre-assessments such as the PSAT and PreACT. Continue planning for financial aid.
- Junior year: Your teen should determine if colleges of interest require college entrance examinations. Juniors usually take preliminary tests in the fall. Based on the results, your teen can consider taking a college entrance exam study course. Juniors should register to take the SAT and/or ACT in the spring.
- Senior year: In the fall, your teen can consider retaking the SAT and begin college applications. Encourage your student to find out and keep track of every deadline for applying to schools and for financial aid. Meeting these is essential.
No matter what grade your student is in, meet with a school counselor annually to make sure your teen is taking the classes needed to fulfill both high school graduation requirements and college admittance requirements.
