Volunteer Activities Help Prepare Teens for the Future
Even the best class lessons can't give teens all the skills they need to prepare for the future. Some of the best learning takes place after school.
Volunteer activities can give your teen a chance to show independence, take risks and shine. There are many different ways teens can find meaningful volunteer activities. Encourage your teen to consider:
- Informal volunteering. Your teen might watch a neighbor's kids or join a group of students who are cleaning up a park. Informal volunteer activities are the easiest to find. They don't require a long-term commitment. They may whet your teen's interest to get more involved.
- Formal volunteering. Perhaps your teen could get a regular volunteer job at a food bank or tutoring a younger student. Formal volunteer jobs teach responsibility—teens have to show up when they say they will. They can often help teens decide whether they want a career in a particular field.
- School-based service clubs. From foreign language clubs to yearbook, sports or music, there are clubs for every interest. Some clubs are organized to provide service in the school and in the community. Groups like the student government can also help students help others.
- Community organizations. Many out-of-school clubs offer teens a chance to learn and grow. Most religious organizations offer activities for youth. Your teen might also think about scouts, 4-H or community sports organizations.
