Solve Problems With Your Teen Instead of Lecturing

Many parents lecture until they're blue in the face, but their teens keep doing the things they know they shouldn't. That's probably because lecturing just doesn't work.

What does? Working on a problem together. When you lecture, you almost force your teen to become angry and defensive. To encourage your teen to act responsibly, try a different approach. Say, "I'd really like to hear what's going on with you so we can talk about it." Kids are more likely to listen if they feel listened to.
