Review the School Year with Your Teen

The end of the school year is a great time to reassess your expectations for your teen. Have a conversation with your student to discuss goals and progress. What are your student's views on the subject?

Here are some questions to consider together:

Reviewing the year gives your teen a "benchmark" to use for setting academic goals for next year. Ask what your student would like to improve. Encourage your teen to come up with a list of specific goals ("I want to raise my English grade from a B to an A") and write them down.

Work together to plan steps your teen will take to reach each goal. Is there anything your student can do now to get started? For example, taking a writing class at a local community college over the summer could help your teen strengthen writing skills.

Then, support your teen along the way. Knowing that you have high expectations—and that you believe your student can reach them—is great motivation for your teen to put in the effort.
