Encourage Your Teen to Create a Personal Positives Board

Teens are self-conscious, and they can be especially hard on themselves. They think they are too fat or too thin or too weak or too slow to learn. Or they think no one will like them because they have a zit or glasses. Social media can make this worse when teens compare their day-to-day selves with other people on their best days.

To counter these feelings, suggest that your teen create a special bulletin board in a visible spot at home. It's a place to post anything your teen really likes or is proud of—notes from friends, postcards, well-done schoolwork, a ticket stub from the school play your teen was in. And unlike on social media, your teen's likes are the only ones that matter.

The board will be a visible reminder of things that make your teen feel happy and positive.
