Don't Let Your Teen Rule Out a Career Without Researching It

Your teen loves the idea of going into medicine for a career. "But I don't want to go to college for eight years."

So your student focuses on something else—and is miserable. If only your teen had known that it is possible to become a dental assistant with less than two years of college! Preparing for a rewarding healthcare career might have been a realistic option.

The U.S. Department of Labor issues one of the best resources for finding practical information about careers. The Occupational Outlook Handbook gives information on how to prepare for a career as well as what to expect. It includes facts on average salaries. It also talks about job prospects. After all, it's no good preparing for a career if there aren't any jobs in the field.
