Suggest Some Techniques for Reinforcing Math Skills
Is your teen struggling with math? The situation may not be as complicated as it seems. Often, one or two changes will be enough to help your teen improve. The key is to take action as soon as possible.
Much of math is like a puzzle. It's hard to see where the new piece fits until you look at the existing pieces.
Encourage your teen to:
- Avoid losing "pieces of the puzzle." Your teen should do at least a little math every day. Even if there's no math assignment due the next day, encourage your student to do a few problems. This may even make the next assignment easier.
- Find a partner. Encourage your teen to team up with another student who is strong in math. Brainstorm together about ways your teen could help this student in exchange for math help.
- Remember the reading. Math is more than numbers. There are hundreds of math terms. Your teen will have a hard time with geometry without knowing that a plane is not just a flying machine.
- Take careful notes. In math, a couple of incorrect words, one wrong number or a misplaced decimal point can make a problem take on a whole new meaning. Students who aren't sure if their notes are correct should check them with the teacher after class.
- Think in terms of patterns. Patterns are what math is all about. Often, one problem in a particular set will feature something in common with other problems in the set. Encourage your teen to find the pattern. It's a helpful start toward solving the problems.
