Teach Your Teen Acceptable Ways to Express Anger
Uncontrolled anger gets many teens into trouble in school. They may swear, hit or insult another person. And in some cases, uncontrolled anger has tragic effects.
It's vital that families discuss safe, acceptable ways to express anger with their students. Suggest that your teen:
- Count to 10. This classic method is simple and teaches your teen self-control. Counting to 10 gives people a chance to think about what they are doing and let their emotions settle down.
- Take hold of anger. Teens can cover their mouths with both hands and let their emotion quietly flow out. This gives them a chance to express anger without yelling. The hands over the mouth are a signal to contain the flow of angry words.
- Just say, "I'm angry." Giving a name to the emotion can often keep a teen from saying something worse. These words allow your teen and the other person to talk about what's causing the anger—and what they can both do about it.
