Three Tips Make Note-taking More Effective

Some teachers provide handouts or slide decks with information about what is being covered in class. But students who also take careful notes in class have an easier time studying for tests.

Some basic note-taking strategies can help students make their notes as effective as possible. Review these tips with your teen, especially as exams approach:

  1. Abbreviate frequently-used words. Your teen will get bogged down and behind trying to spell out everything that the teacher says. Writing w/o instead of without saves time. Encourage your student to figure out abbreviations for the key words in each course, and make a dictionary of them.
  2. Leave lots of space in the margins. While in class, your teen should take notes on two thirds of the page and leave the other third blank. Later, when reviewing, your teen can use the blank space to summarize key ideas or write questions near the relevant section of class notes. This gives students a better understanding of what they know and don't know.
  3. Include drawings and diagrams. It isn't necessary to write everything in words. Your teen should be sure to label the parts so the drawings will be helpful later.
