When Grades Drop, Activities May Not Need to Follow

Many parents react to poor grades by restricting their student's extracurricular activities. They "ground" them from sports, clubs and other after-school interests.

But school counselors advise that this isn't necessarily the best approach—especially in times when many normal outlets for teens to socialize may not be available.

When completely cut off from school activities, many students who once loved school stop liking it. They may also fill their time with far less desirable activities in less desirable places.

Instead of restricting activities, counselors recommend trying alternatives to encourage teens to put more effort into schoolwork. For instance, you might require your teen to put in one hour of study time for every hour spent at sports practice or other activities.
