Parents Play a Critical Role in Developing Teen Resilience

Learning is not always easy. It requires hard work and persistence. And if things are challenging, as they have been throughout the pandemic, it may also require resilience.

Resilient students have the ability to adapt to tough circumstances. They can look challenges in the eye and overcome them. Luckily, students can learn to be resilient.

To help your teen develop resilience:

• Be more caring than critical. Your support will give your teen the confidence to keep trying. Say that you know your teen has what it takes to learn, grow and succeed.
• Highlight strengths. If your teen learned how to shoot free throws with lots of self-disciplined practice, suggest using the same method to learn how to work an algebra problem.
• Encourage school involvement. Look for a club, a team or an activity your teen can join, in person or online. Being connected to others in school also helps build resilience.
