Grades a Problem? Get Your Teen Involved

If you are concerned about your teen's grades, it's important to take action without taking over. The best thing families can do is to help their students take responsibility for their own learning by involving them in solving the problem.

Talk with your teen calmly about each grade. Ask, "Do you know why you earned the grade you did?" and "What do you think you need to do to improve?"

Encourage your teen to ask teachers to suggest ways to learn and study more effectively. You can also have your teen schedule a parent-teacher-student conference, in person or online. At it, you can both find out what the teacher expects, what improvements your student needs to make, and what resources may be available to help.

Then, monitor your teen's progress over the next grading period. Ask your teen for periodic updates on grades, if the school doesn't send them automatically. Stay in touch with the teachers. You, your teen and the teachers are a team working for your teen's success.
