Is your teen taking a foreign language class? Learning a foreign language means learning new habits. That means working every single day.

Share these language-learning tips with your teen:

Use every minute of class time. Your teen should be sure to pay attention to what goes on in class, and ask questions as necessary.
Memorize. There's no way around it—to learn a new language, your teen will have to memorize vocabulary words, verb conjugations and phrases. Working with flash cards helps students strengthen recall.
Learn when to use the dictionary. When students stop to look up every unfamiliar word, they rarely get through the reading. Instead, your teen should try to figure out from the context what a word means, then jot it down on a sticky note. Later, your teen can double-check the meaning in the dictionary.
Don't try to cram the night before the test. Learning a new language takes daily practice.
Study out loud. Have your teen speak the words and phrases while memorizing them. This improves efficiency by using both sight and hearing.
