Explain Do's and Don'ts for School Success
In middle and high school, students are expected to do more than just sit quietly and behave themselves. Teachers want them to participate in classroom activities. Often 10 percent or more of a student's grade can depend on class participation.
Make sure your teen understands that in order to be successful, students should:
- Attend all classes and arrive on time, whether school is in person or online.
- Come prepared with completed homework and books, notebooks, pencils and paper.
- Ask thoughtful questions.
- Contribute to class discussions and group work.
Successful students don't:
- Talk excessively when not called on.
- Daydream or pay poor attention.
- Put their heads down on their desks or sleep in class.
- Move about the room when it's not required for class activity.
- Fidget or play with hair, make-up, games or gadgets.
- Complete homework for one class during another.
- Make rude or inappropriate remarks or gestures.
