Do You Know What to Expect From Your Teen?

Kids change a lot—physically, mentally and emotionally—as they move through the teen years. "What's typical for teens?" many parents ask.

Don't be surprised if your teen:

• Acts like friends matter more than you do.
• Needs your help, but won't admit it.
• Often tells you "You don't understand."
• Says "Everybody's doing it."
• Stays on an emotional roller coaster—up one minute, then down; adventurous, then shy; childish, then mature.
• Has bursts of energy followed by long periods of "vegging out" or doing nothing.
• Gets feelings hurt easily.
• Criticizes well-loved things—home, school ... and you!
• Is more self-critical—about abilities and appearance.
• Pokes, teases or puts down the opposite sex.
• Is embarrassed if you try to talk about sex.
• Grunts instead of talking in full sentences ("Whatever").
• Starts talking (perhaps passionately) about social issues.
• Stays preoccupied with personal thoughts and feelings.
• Experiments with different looks.
• Wants more privacy and independence.
• Argues about chores and personal hygiene.
• Wants to be a rock star, professional athlete or any other occupation that's viewed as glamorous.
• Is highly attracted to material things.
• Accuses you of preaching and not listening.
• Tries your patience.
• Does what you suggest ... but never while you're looking.
