Parents Can Help Teens Sort Through Feelings

Having conflicting thoughts and feelings about what's going on in their lives can make it difficult for students to focus on schoolwork and other important activities.

You can help your teen sort things out by sharing your own feelings when you are alone together.

To share how you feel, use some of the following sentence starters and fill in the blanks:

Then ask your teen, "What makes you feel good?" or "What makes you feel sad or angry?" Just having the opportunity to talk about these topics can help your teen cope with strong feelings and refocus attention where it needs to be.
