Sports Can Boost Academic Achievement

You know that playing a sport makes your teen’s body stronger. But you may not be aware of other benefits of sports.

High school athletes tend to get better grades and are less likely to drop out of school than those who aren’t in sports. They are also more likely to go to college than non-athletes.

Participating in sports helps teens develop the self-esteem that helps them avoid some of the biggest pitfalls of adolescence. They are more likely to stay away from using tobacco and drugs. They are also more likely to avoid other risky behaviors.

Athletic involvement offers other benefits to teens. It teaches skills that are vital to success in life—teamwork, self-discipline, goal setting and focus.
