Look for Interests You Can Share With Your Teen
Teens often say they don’t want to be seen with their parents. And sometimes, they don’t. But don’t be fooled. Most teens are secretly pleased when their parents want to spend special time with them.
One way to make the most of your time together is to get involved in something your teen is interested in. Try one of these ideas:
- Volunteer to help with an after-school activity. Parents can do everything from coaching to passing out programs at a performance.
- Ask your teen about his favorite band. Try listening to the music. Then talk about it with him. Or read his favorite book and ask what he thinks about it.
- Take your teen to work with you one day, if possible. He may be interested in finding out more about what you do. If you work at home, share what you do with your teen.
- Schedule some special time with your teen to do something you both enjoy—like you used to do when he was younger.
