A Diploma Makes a Difference

Is your teen tired of school? Bored? Convinced that there’s no need to graduate? Discuss some financial facts of life. They may not change your teen’s mind, but they present a sobering picture.

It’s no surprise that the opportunities for income and a comfortable life increase with the amount of education a person has. But your teen may be surprised to find out that having no diploma almost guarantees a life of just scraping by. People without a high school diploma have the highest rate of unemployment. If they can find jobs, men typically earn hundreds of dollars less per month than high school graduates. They may be able to afford rent or a car payment. But not both.

For women, the picture is much worse. Women without high school diplomas typically earn only about 80 percent of what men do. Forget a car—a woman without a diploma won’t even be able to afford a new outfit.
